BIO

I’ve been making art for 40 years in a variety of media from photography to conceptual documentary to artist books. My work has been exhibited internationally and is in the collection of Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Houston Museum of Art, Biblioteque Nationale, Museum of Modern Art (New York), and Chicago Institute of Contemporary Art. In addition, I have written extensively on art and photography in a variety of publications including Artforum, Frieze, Afterimage, and Little Brown Mushroom Blog.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY & MENTORSHIP

There is nothing I’d rather be doing than discussing artwork and, to my mind, that is the heart of mentorship. I’m not interested in telling anyone what to do. But I’m always interested in a discussion of what has been done with an eye to what happens next. The key outcome for any MFA student is the creation of a sustainable practice, which is a set of activities (research, conceptualization, implementation, documentation, etc) carried out within the larger intentional framework of a life. How do we pay attention to what we are paying attention to?
