BIO

My focus as an artist has been in studio painting and large scale public murals. As an adjunct instructor, I’ve taught drawing and painting classes at MCAD in the college’s Fine Arts Department since 2009. These classes range from Foundational to advanced coursework. My work has generally focused on abstraction and process; I am interested in representational work as well as a mode of expression. Since August of 2020, I have been engaged in an immersive study of concepts and histories related to the fields of color theories and sciences. The project is an ongoing effort that ranges beyond the concerns of painting and color mixing per se, centering on elements of human color vision and the perception of visual artworks as means of communication. In addition to writing my own compendium, I have produced a series of podcast episodes based on the research, “Chromosphere: The Color Theory Podcast”.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY & MENTORSHIP

I am an alumni of MCAD’s Graduate School (class of 2006), and I am familiar with the student/mentee relationship and process. I benefited greatly from working with my mentor, Elizabeth Erickson, and welcome the opportunity to contribute to the learning atmosphere. My modus operandi as a teacher is forming a pathfinding collaboration of learning. I am interested in what motivates people, and my goal is to ask the questions that compel people to define their positions and outlooks so as to advance in their understanding and work in the ways that best accommodate their goals. I included Multidisciplinary and Non-Disciplinary as areas of interest, which are outside my focus on painting, drawing, and public art, as I believe my background in color theory could be an asset for artists approaching their work in a myriad of ways.
