BIO 

For more than 25 years, Anne Labovitz has made artwork that examines notions of contemporary portraiture, color, and the activation of creative space that connects us. She is committed to public artworks that are interactive and participatory as well as strikingly beautiful. Using color, mark making, and dialogue, Labovitz creates site-specific work designed to engage a visceral and emotional place for viewers. Most recent large-scale public works include two monumental installations at the MSP Airport (2019/20, currently on view), and her six-year international touring exhibition, 122 Conversations (2014-2019). Previous solo exhibitions include Layers (Burnet Gallery, Minneapolis); Composite Portraits (Tweed Museum, Duluth, MN); and Passions (Athenaeum, La Jolla, CA). Labovitz’s paintings are part of permanent collections at the Minnesota Museum of American Art, St Paul, MN; the Tweed Museum of Art, Duluth, MN; the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, La Jolla, CA; the Frederick R Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, MN; and the International Gallery of Portrait in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Labovitz’s work has been published in Studio Visit Magazine, Vol. 19, New American Paintings Midwest 2010 and the Penang International Printmaking Exhibition 2010 and International Contemporary Artists, vol II and III. She has co-authored four books on portraiture with Australian artist Carole Best, and provided illustrations for the children’s book, Honoral & Zarina. Her artwork has been discussed on Minnesota Public Radio and written up in the Chicago Sun Times, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Villager, the Duluth Tribune, L’etoile Magazine and the Taos Review. Ever true to her Northshore MN roots, she was named 2013 Duluth Artist of the Year, and in 2015 was awarded keys to all six sister cities of Duluth Sister Cities International (DSCI). Duluth Mayor Emily Larson declared April 27, 2019 Anne Labovitz day.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY & MENTORSHIP

My teaching philosophy includes an approach called I/Thou, a relational listening process written about by Martin Buber which addresses the connection between any two individuals. I employ rigorous dialogue and varied mediums in my praxis, which allows me to teach adaptively according to different approaches to making and thinking. I relish in working closely and equally with others, engaging students in a reciprocal exchange of ideas and practice. I bring to the mentorship experience a lifetime of varied and evolutionary techniques ranging from painting, drawing, printmaking, to mark-making, public, and social practice as well as a passion for professional practice. I have the experience of consciously changing mediums, practice, and direction to better facilitate my message to the world, while continuing the successes of my career. As a mentor, I bring an experienced understanding of the nuances of both a strong practice alongside the importance of networking and working within an arts milieu. I love to work with artists. I will meet the MFA candidate with focus on their practice and vision. I have an international, national practice while rooted firmly in the local, sharing resources is a passion of mine. My role is to help you develop your praxis.
