MCAD MFA Fall Exhibition / The Back of Beyond

September 25, 2018

Every fall, we launch into the new school year with the MCAD MFA Fall Exhibition. Second-year MFA students have a chance to display their summer explorations, and a new class of MFA students get to introduce their work to the MCAD and greater Minneapolis communities for the first time!

The fall exhibition is an entirely student-run event, bringing the 2018/2019 cohorts together to facilitate and produce each aspect of the show. The 2018 show entitled, The Back of Beyond, was chaired by Hallie Bahn ’19 and Heather Lamano ’19 and explored themes of the wilderness in all its iterations. From the organizers, “Definitions of the wild are intrinsically linked to our definition of ourselves – it is ‘the other’ which runs parallel to the human narrative.”

The Back of Beyond 2018 showcased the work of first and second-year MCAD MFA students. A wide variety of work was featured, from photography, painting, sculpture, and collage, to film, illustration, graphic design, and performance art. On Friday evening, the public was invited to the MFA gallery for an evening of great art and conversation.

The show’s participants were encouraged to consider their own definition of the wild, whether that be the other, the hinterland, the adjacent, the unknown, no-man’s land, or simply the beyond.
