Which year did you graduate and what brought you to MCAD for your MFA?
I graduated in the first MFA class in 1995.
How did your creative practice change while you were at MCAD?
Together, the dynamic program and the group conversation inspired me to work hard and establish goals to continue in the creative field. My mentor, Jerry Allen gave me good advice of which I still use today. He taught a class called “Create Your Own Future” which gave me the tools to work as a professional. Shortly after graduation I was hired full time to teach in the Art Department at St. Cloud State University. Through the MCAD program I gained many teaching skills.
Do you have a favorite memory from your time in the program?
The MFA program stresses the importance of networking—I made time to go to the studios of my peers and have conversations of the work we were doing. Also, I started a teaching group, and professors were very happy to come in to address the issues of how we teach, and of how we learn.
What is next? Any new projects or life events that are in the pipeline?
After 24 years at St. Cloud State University, I am retired now and working on artists’ books at the Minnesota Center For Book Arts. My latest work evolves around issues and behaviors as we traverse the COVID-19 virus.
