Art Shanty Projects

April 5, 2016

Sound + Vision XXX Art Shanty, by MCAD MFA candidates Kathryn Miller, Julie Benda, and Kelsey Bosch provides a phenomenological experience of sound, light, and ice that will lead participants to reconfigure and deepen relationships to winter in Minnesota.

Sound + Vision XXX is a collaborative project that endeavors to negotiate the mystery, femininity, and physicality of frozen lakes. From the geographical center of the lake, we explore how our senses of sound and vision inform our sense of place. Separate sound and vision spaces isolate and examine various aspects of the lake environment: the white of its light, the bathymetry of the lake, the thickness of the ice, the sound of the lake working, making ice. The project explores a sense of isolation versus a sense of community. We welcome participants into the warming room, yet each space is a place for solitary contemplation, intended to challenge our understanding of place and offer a space to sink back into ourselves and find resonance in the landscape.
