From Dickinson’s statement: “For the past two years, I have been struggling with the dichotomy of “low” and “high” art. My practice has remained interdisciplinary, but I kept finding resistance from my audience and within myself where I attempted to merge my zine-making practice with sculpture and installation. With ​purgatory​, I found a way to seam them together. Overall, ​purgatory​ is an immersive environment, a sculptural installation acting as a familiar place. I gathered furniture and decoration associated with a typical waiting room – durable, mass-produced chairs and side tables, small house plants, wall decor, and reading material. However, small details skew the memories we have with these places. Instead of pots, the plants are homed inside red solo cups. A UV light emits a bright purple glow from underneath the chairs. A frame misses the picture inside. Instead of ​Good Housekeeping o​ r ​Reader’s Digest​, guests page through artist zines.”
