From Beatrez’s statement: “Within my work I’m looking at ways of making new meaning through combinations of stimuli. The word “stimuli” refers to a thing or event that results in a functional reaction in an organ or tissue. This can be imagery, scent, light, material, texture, sound, and other viewers. I’m interested in moments when there is a lack of language to name sensory information and the categorizing people fall back on when they are faced with ambiguity or foreign stimuli. I see this work as redesigning code, experimenting with constants and shifting variables. In my work I use pairing as a method for creating psychological distance, reemergence of new meaning, heightened energy and amplification. My work contains many multisensory cues to activate both the mind and the body. I’m interested in setting up conditions for presence of the body, awareness of the body, and to question our conditioned language attached to stimuli.”
