This past spring, Jesus Li ’23 participated in our Launch Program with Forecast Public Art as a funded design/illustration fellow. Forecast Public Art is a nonprofit organization that activates, inspires, and advocates for public art that advances justice, health, and human dignity.

Below are some of Li’s reflections from the experience.

The work with Forecast consisted of building off new templates for their social media accounts using the existing brand. There were two projects I focused on: advertising a conference/event and communicating the existence of the video of the conference/event after it was over.

Part of the challenge was expanding the visual elements and graphic treatments into pieces that look cohesive and dynamic since many of their events have two or more headshots. At the same time, it was necessary to play with the color palette to elevate the brand and make it feel more cheerful without losing professionalism.

Intending to close these events without losing accessibility, I used the first templates to create a graphic extension, playing with the same forms but a different layout, emphasizing the call to action and the participants.

Beyond the experience gained as a designer, doing this fellowship allowed me to know how a non-profit organization works in an artistic context—likewise, the value of creating conversation spaces, physical or virtual, with informative or revolutionary purposes.
