Alumni Highlight / Essma Imady MAEP Thicker Than Water

March 23, 2018

This March, Essma Imady MFA ’16 exhibits new work in Thicker Than Water as part of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program. Imady is a filmmaker, sculptor, and installation artist from Damascus, Syria. Her work explores missing narrative within the art work.

“The Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program (MAEP) is a curatorial program of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, dedicated to exhibiting and supporting artists living and working in Minnesota.”

About Imady’s MAEP exhibition:

“The refugee experience has taken hold of the news and social media. However, the typical refugee narrative centers around the journey one must take to remove oneself and one’s children from danger to safety. For her MAEP exhibition, Essma Imady meditates on the nuances not told in the news—specifically, the anxiety that refugee parents face. She will create a new body of work that explores the tension inherent in the emotions that refugee and immigrant parents experience—safety and fear, familiarity and strangeness, nostalgia and heritage. Her new body of work inspires conversations on what we pass on to our children.”

Join Imady on May 17 at 7pm for an artists talk about Thicker Than Water, and stop by the U.S. Bank Gallery at the Minneapolis Institute of Art before June 24 to view Imady’s work.
