Liza Dorsey / 2016 Thesis Candidate

May 6, 2016

Liza Dorsey has been working toward describing and displaying documents that seek to encode the experience of flow onto a surface. Flow, a state of mind characterized by complete absorption in an activity, is something she experiences and implements when she paint. Driven by her competitive nature and a desire to create work that repeatedly evolves, Liza’s gestural abstractions are records of her mental and physical activity and attempts to enact experiences of work and play.

Through attempts to turn the art object into a spectacle, or a display of the proof of the physical performance by the artist in the studio, Liza seeks to create shared experiences for the viewer. She strives to entertain and allow the spectator to become a part of the arena of painting. In this sense, her work equates art to sport, as both activities are voluntary forms of creative expression and showcase the ability of an individual engaging in an activity.

Be sure to join us on Friday, May 13th at our new MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Liza’s thesis work along with the other 2016 graduates.
