Essma Imady / MIA Presentation

November 13, 2015

During the spring semester of this year, second-year student, Essma Imady, presented her paper titled Finding the Feminine Divine within Islamic Mythology at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The museum asked her if she would present the paper again for their Art Illuminating Human Rights gallery talk.

Imady presented research she has been conducting since last year on the piece by Maimouna Patrizia Gueresi, Supha, the artist’s attempt at creating a new religious iconography that uses Islamic religious texts. To then repurpose them in order to excavate and construct a feminine Islamic divine within the discourse of contemporary art. Also presenting at the event along with Essma were Fres Thao and Abdi Phenomenal.
