Collected Residue / Gallery 148

February 19, 2016

Early this February, first-year sculptor Jesse Lentz participated in Collected Residue, a group show in MCAD’s student-run Gallery 148. Jesse’s work, “My Grandmother’s Shadows” was a collection of small and curious objects that remind her of her grandmother, and the witchcraft she prepared to practice.

The show  was aptly named. According to their event page, “when loved ones pass away, it is normal to keep their objects in remembrance of them. In the past, it was normal to keep a lock of the deceased’s hair. Photos capture the energy of a moment; this energy is transferred to those who look at the photo longing to remember a time gone by. The weapon used in a murder carries with it a strong energy, as does the wedding band.

“These mementos are not valuable themselves, but what they remind us of gives them their worth. Whether it be the memory of one’s grandfather, or of an invisible god, one uses these objects as a target of focus in order to bring back the past.”
